Early on, even a big lead is fragile because plenty of scoring remains; late in the game, the same lead is nearly safe because the uncertainty has shrunk. Modeling the remaining margin as a shrinking random variable produces the classic curve that broadcasts now show on screen.

How it works

Win-probability models treat the remaining scoring margin as a random variable whose uncertainty shrinks as the clock runs down. Early, even a large lead is fragile because much scoring remains; late, the same lead is nearly decisive.
