The rocket equation grows delta-v only with the logarithm of the mass ratio, so a single stage hauling empty tanks all the way up is hopelessly inefficient. Staging drops dead weight along the way: each stage contributes ve·ln(mass ratio), and their sum easily clears the ~9.4 km/s needed for low Earth orbit.

Governing equation

Reading this result: 2 stages at Isp 350s and mass ratio 4 each sum to 9.5 km/s — past the ~9.4 km/s LEO budget, since every stage adds ve·ln(ratio) after dropping dead weight.

About this simulation

The full Rocket Staging tool models a space capsule with the same numerics engineers and scientists use — running entirely client-side. Change any parameter and the result updates in real time, so you can build intuition, check a design, or teach the concept without spreadsheets or installs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I simulate a space capsule?
Open this page and use the live Rocket Staging tool below — set your inputs and the simulation runs instantly in your browser using real numerics. No install, no account needed.
Is it free?
Yes. The simulation runs free in your browser. A one-time unlock or a Pro plan adds advanced parameters, saved presets, data import, and clean exports.
Can I use my own numbers?
Absolutely — every input is adjustable, and with data import you can drive a space capsule from your own measurements.
